Song lyrics
The words sung in this recording, supplied by Alex Kryve. The performance’s wording and repetitions are preserved.
Recognising the song
Our version is titled Маменька — Mamenka. The Cygane.info portal publishes a corresponding text as Шаленка — Shalenka. The connection rests on a sequence of shared images rather than a title alone: mother and shawl, a horse being harnessed, a matchmaking journey and a dark-browed Romani boy. [2] [3]
Russian and Romani appear alongside each other in the text. Published versions render Romani expressions differently in Cyrillic. [2] [3] These spellings can help a singer read the words, but do not by themselves establish a dialect or a standard Romani orthography.
Shared words allow us to compare the publications. Establishing whether their melodies, harmonies and performance structures also match requires listening to the particular recordings. Titles such as Shalenka and Shalyonkitsa should likewise be checked against their contents rather than automatically treated as interchangeable.
The documentary trail
| Date | Document | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 1989 → 1990 | Recording and publication of Dufunya Vishnevsky and the Tradas group’s Lako gango (Her Echo), catalogue С60 30301 006. Mamenka, sung by Vasily Tsurilo, 2:59. [1] | A dated release explicitly labels the track a Romani folk song. |
| Publication date not established | Shalenka on Cygane.info. [2] | A corresponding text is published with both music and words attributed to folk tradition. |
| Publication date not established | Mamenka in the Karaoke.ru catalogue. [3] | Another textual variant; the writers of music and words are listed as unknown. |
| 2026 | Alex Kryve’s performance on YouTube. [4] | The contemporary version featured on this page. |
The 1989 recording and 1990 release are the earliest dated evidence in this selection. They do not establish when the song originated or that this was its first recording. An earlier score, printed text or sound recording has not yet been established here.
A record is a primary document for its own release and credits. A catalogue reproducing those details helps locate the document. Neither is automatically the original source of the song itself.
The words change
Two published texts make the differences visible. The extracts retain each source’s spelling: they are comparison material, not a proposed corrected lyric.
| Passage | Shalenka, Cygane.info [2] | Mamenka, Karaoke.ru [3] |
|---|---|---|
| Request for a shawl | «Ту кинэ мангэ шаленочку» | «ты купи мане шалёначеку» |
| Recipient of the gift | «Подарю золовушке» | «подарю соловушке» |
| Closing image | «На душе моей лежит» | «До сих пор в глазах стоит» |
Other differences concern the person asked to harness the horse, the horse’s description and the wording of the matchmaking journey. The story remains recognisable without the words matching exactly. [2] [3]
These pages do not establish which reading came first. A difference may reflect a performer’s variant, a transcription by ear or an editorial error. Choosing between readings requires a particular recording and a language check. We therefore do not present either online text as the sole authentic lyric.
Why we call it a folk song
The description has a specific documentary basis: the Tradas release identifies the song as traditional [1]. Cygane.info also attributes the corresponding music and words to folk tradition [2]. Karaoke.ru places it among folk songs and lists unknown authors [3]. That last entry adds context, but an unknown author alone does not prove folk origins.
Romani folk song is therefore an attribution supported by the sources listed here. This selection does not establish the original writers, date of origin or earliest form.
There is still room for individual contributions. A singer, ensemble director or arranger may give a traditional song a particular interpretation. Its history should distinguish tradition, arrangement, performance and sound recording. A traditional attribution does not automatically determine the legal status of every modern version.
Alex Kryve’s version
This publication features Alex Kryve’s performance. New technologies made it possible to restore the recording and work on its sound, with the aim of preserving the performance’s character, mood and feeling.
Performance — Alex Kryve. Preparation and release — KS Company. Historical releases and lyric publications are research sources; their contributors are not credited as participants in the new recording.
Mamenka belongs to The Romani Song: Language, Memory, Road. That broader article explores the movement of songs between languages, family memory and the stage. Here, the approach is applied to one song through specific documents and questions that remain open.
What remains to be found
Open questions include an earlier recording or score; the history of the title Shalenka; a language check of the published words; a comparison of melodies and arrangements; and changes that can be traced to particular performers.
This page establishes no connection between Mamenka and Eugen Doga’s music for Gypsies Are Found Near Heaven. The confirmed material on Doga and Emil Loteanu’s work and A. Buzyleva’s performance on the film’s soundtrack release belongs to the separate study of Nane Cocha. The corresponding song is listed in the catalogue of works on Doga’s official website.
